Brandon Xu

Cellist

Indianapolis native Brandon Xu is a recipient of the Eastman School’s prestigious Performer’s Certificate distinction as well as the 2017 MTNA National Chamber Music Competition First Prize with the Windsor Piano Trio.  Notable recent performances include the Nickel Plate Arts Festival (Indianapolis, IN), the Green Mountain Chamber Music Festival (Burlington, VT), the Chamber Music @ NewPark series (Ithaca, NY), and the Toronto Summer Music Festival (Toronto, ON). Brandon has also been acclaimed in publication from the Chicago Cello Society and was recently a guest on WXXI’s Backstage Pass with Julia Figueras. His past collaborators include James Ehnes, the St. Lawrence Quartet, the TSO Chamber Soloists, David Harding, and Nikki Chooi. He is fortunate to have received fellowships to pursue study at festivals such as the Great Wall International Music Festival (Beijing), the Eastern Music Festival, and the Centre d’arts Orford, where his teachers included Richard Aaron, Amir Eldan, and the Gryphon Trio. He has also performed in masterclasses for artists such as Nicolas Altstaedt, Carter Brey, Wei Lu, and Darrett Adkins.

Brandon has performed regularly with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra during the 2017-2018 subscription season, which included multiple CD recordings and an acclaimed 2018 tour of Poland. Brandon’s primary mentors include Dr. William Grubb and Prof. David Ying. Brandon holds a Bachelor’s of Music degree from the Eastman School of Music where he received the Performer’s Certificate and John Celentano Prize, and is pursuing a Master’s of Music degree at Indiana University under the tutelage of Prof. Eric Kim.
