In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, Voces Intimae art song organization presents beloved art songs from the Spanish-language canon.  Music by Manuel Ponce, María Grever, Julio César Oliva, and other Latin-American icons. Sopranos Amy Canchola and Rachael Maura Fant will be joined by Noe Garcia on guitar. Por Siempre Sabines is a song cycle written in 1997 by living composer Julio César Oliva. Por Siempre Sabines is based on the poetry by prolific Mexican poet Jaime Sabines. The text takes us through the many trials, tribulations and happy moments couples experience together. Estrellita is a well known Mexican ballad written by composer Manuel Ponce. Manuel Ponce composed more than forty works for guitar and fifty popular songs and song cycles. Estrellita is a classic in the genre of art song literature. This particular version for voice and guitar was arranged by Gregg Nestor. This evening will celebrate the beloved sounds of traditional canciones and pay homage to the legends of this genre.

What are art songs? Simply, classical pieces for voice that are not part of a staged dramatic work like an opera or oratorio. They are usually musical settings of poems and are accompanied by a piano or other instrument.

Voces Intimae is the premier art song organization based in Dallas, Texas. Open Classical artistic director Mark Landson is now also co-executive director of Voces Intimae, and the entire Voces Intimae 2021-2022 season is co-sponsored by Open Classical’s Artist Series.
